Oscar Piastri

Oscar Piastri won the Formula 2 championship in 2021 and the Formula 3 championship the year before that, making him the most decorated junior driver in the recent history of the feeder categories. And yet his path to a Formula 1 race seat was blocked — Alpine had signed him as a reserve driver, Renault before them had funded his career, and when Fernando Alonso vacated the Alpine race seat for 2023, a contract dispute that went to the Contract Recognition Board determined that Piastri had actually been contracted to McLaren rather than Alpine. He joined McLaren for 2023 as a genuine Formula 1 rookie.

His debut season confirmed what the junior categories had suggested: exceptional technical intelligence, a near-flawless approach to race management, and a qualifying ability that was immediately within the same range as his more experienced teammate Lando Norris.
