The Race

Oscar Piastri's victory at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix arrived in the way that his entire career has suggested it eventually would: controlled, measured, inevitable. McLaren were the fastest team at the Hungaroring, their MCL38 carrying the pace advantage that a season of development had delivered. From that foundation, Piastri built a race that demonstrated every element of his talent in a single two-hour document.

He managed the tyres with a patience unusual in a driver in only his second Formula 1 season. He defended his position when required with precision and intelligence. He attacked when the opportunity was available without committing to manoeuvres he could not complete. The race unfolded at the rhythm he had set at the beginning, and he arrived at the finish with a margin that reflected genuine advantage rather than the product of attrition behind him.

The Hungarian Grand Prix was the completion of a rapid education. Piastri had arrived in Formula 1 twelve months earlier as a junior champion who had never tested a Formula 1 car in anger before his debut. He ended his second season winning grands prix for a top team with the composure and authority of a driver many years senior to him. The question for those watching Piastri closely is not whether he will challenge for world championships — it is how many he will win, and how soon the first will arrive.
